Broad's Family Traditions

“Family traditions counter alienation and confusion.

They help us define who we are; they provide something steady, reliable and safe in a confusing world.” – Susan Lieberman

When I talked to a fellow homeschooling mom and photographer (Urban Images Photography) about our upcoming photoshoot, Carla mentioned that it would be great to capture her husband, who makes big breakfasts on the weekends! It is their favourite family tradition: Zaak's grandfather did the same - big Sunday breakfast for whole family and they value these memories so much! Carla and her husband Zaak hope to raise their children in a more “old fashioned” way where the importance of time is the most valued.

I really loved this idea - storytelling is my passion. It has meaning and purpose to last through generations, to connect to the roots of your family - and we as a human beings always want to know where we came from! I'm sure that our grandkids and their grandkids will thank us for memories we create now!

Usually standard family photos, where everyone looking at the camera and smiling (or not), can't tell much about people. It just shows how people look. On other side documentary photograph even on it's own without rest of the story can tell so much more: mood, emotions, characters, mimics and connections between people, how they interact with each other and how they react on different things. It shows uniqueness of family and each member of it. It's not only shows smiles and happiness but disappointments and tears, frustration and painful moments which all together is the full dimension of our parenthood and childhood!
